The First Blog!

Wow, so this is the first bloggination! Yeah, well, welcome to my blog. I'm studying architecture at Portsmouth University- in England. I started a week ago, and it's pretty awesome... However, what's not awesome is the fact that I have the fattest cold/flu virus ever. Plus it is raining like a biatch today, so I thought to myself- let's set this thing up!

So, the main reason for me starting this journal is because unlike when I lived at home, there's so much to talk about, and so many things happening- there should always be something to talk about... Perhaps a little bit too much.

So, whilst I’m on the subject of introducing the blog, I'll introduce my flatmates.... Ok

Me: I'm Jamie, evidently... Make up your own mind what I'm like, but I come from Devon- the back of beyond. Yes, I’m not used to cities, ‘shots,’ basic amenities like shops and traffic. (Ok, I may be exaggerating a little.) Even so, Portsmouth is a big move for me, and since I’m here for 7 years studying architecture, I’d better get used to it.

Dave: [In the flat to my left] He's from Oxford (the city, not the university), and a real mental-case. I think that underneath all the facades he's a good, honest, posh lad, trying to be the life of the party. He's constantly drinking orange and vodka (a terrible mix) and for instance, this morning I think he woke up at eleven 'o' clock and realised he'd missed 2 lectures. He tends to use bizarre words like 'chronic' and listen to 'The Kooks' CD every night before going out... And to think- I used to like the Kooks. Now I’m sick of them. Dave's enthusiasm for life is fantastic and he can always liven up the day with his ridiculous sayings and outbursts.

Abbey: A very tall girl, but really very nice- earnest about almost everything, and probably the flatmate that I’m closest to. She's from London and like me, misses home quite a bit. Even though we're from such different places, we are still great friends and I feel like I could talk to her about anything.

Vicky: A generally nice blond girl, a little bit mad- but aren't we all? She's quite a tomboy, in the way she speaks. She watches 'American Pie' like every other stereotypical teenager but has a funny habit of never opening the curtains in her room... it's permanently dingy and dark in her room. It could be down to the fact that the room still smells from when the shower leaked and the glue melting made the carpet absolutely reek- poor girl.

‘Litty’ (Or Felicity (They're both weird-ass names, and I can't remember either of them): She's fine... quite dependable, and rarely ever is she in the flat. She always shouts: “going' over to the boys' flat, see you later.” Which annoys me a lot, since she does have boys in her own flat (e.g. me?) yet, Dave and I obviously aren't up to the standard of testosterone-filled, bull-fighting, bottle-breaking MEN that the 'boys' flat' contains.

So i've just been told it's someone's birthday who I should know. Let me show you how the conversation went between me and Abbey (a flatmate):

Abbey: Are you coming to the pub tonight?
Me: Ah, I'm not sure; I’ve got a killer cold.
Abbey: Aw, but it's Tom's birthday today!
Me: ... [Blank, blank stare]
Abbey: ...
Me: ... Who's Tom? Which Tom?
Abbey: You know, Tom from across the way?
Me: ... Oh right, yeah I know him... Sorta.

[Note: The fact that I don't know said 'Tom' character isn't because he's a bad person, or a ‘nobody,’ but it's because what with the millions of people I’ve been introduced to every day since arriving at university, I can't remember every nickname, birthday, studied course, penchants and peculiarities of everyone I meet. No offence meant.

Perhaps another reason I don't know the people from 'across the way' very well is because, unlike most other people in my flat, I don't spend most of my precious time over there. I like my room, and my flatmates, and don't see much reason to spend every waking hour in another flat. I know I may sound anti-social... but I swear that's worse.]

But anyway, cut a long story short- I know it's great to celebrate anything and everything when you're a student. Although, should I really care whether it's Tom's birthday if I didn't even know who he was a minute ago? My answer: Probably no. On top of that, Abbey goes on to tell me how 'It'll be soo much fun! Last time you randomly shouted 'yeah!!!' And everyone stared at you! It was hilarious!'

This is my question though- Who was it funny for? Eh? Probably everyone else... Perhaps I’m just a misery. No, I'm definitely a misery.

In a way, thank god I'm doing architecture- at least the tons of work will act as a great excuse for me not to have to go out every sodding night.

So those are my flatmates, and that is the situation- yes they really are that mad. There’s so much more that I could add at this point- but I think I’ll save it for another blog. Anyway I hope this has given a brief introduction to me and my life at the moment!
